Dear Friends & Family,
We (Fred Hrenchuk, Chris Robbins & Lisa Biffin) are
participating in a multi-stage adventure race called the Atacama Crossing 2011.
This event will take place from Sunday March 6th to Saturday March 12th,
across the Atacama Desert in Chile. You will find further details of the
event at the
www.racingtheplanet.com link below, but here is a quick summary of the
event;
The course for the race crosses the stunning Atacama Desert that is more than 15 million
years old and known as the driest place on Earth (fifty times more arid than
Death Valley in California).
In some places along the course, there
has never been a single drop of rain recorded. The Atacama
Desert also has the most lunar-like landscape on Earth and is frequently used
by the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
to test its Mars rover vehicles.
The entire race is held at least
1.6 kilometers / 1 mile above sea level and covers the distance required to
make a horizontal crossing of the country of Chile (250 kilometers /150
miles).
The approximate distances of each stage
are detailed below. There are checkpoints approximately every 10
kilometers / 6 miles along the course where volunteers and a medical doctor are
stationed to give you water and support. Each checkpoint also has a
tent providing shade.
