Dear Friends & Family,

We (Fred Hrenchuk, Chris Robbins & Lisa Biffin) are participating in a multi-stage adventure race called the Atacama Crossing 2011.  This event will take place from Sunday March 6th to Saturday March 12th, across the Atacama Desert in Chile.  You will find further details of the event at the www.racingtheplanet.com link below, but here is a quick summary of the event;

The course for the race crosses the stunning Atacama Desert that is more than 15 million years old and known as the driest place on Earth (fifty times more arid than Death Valley in California).

In some places along the course, there has never been a single drop of rain recorded.  The Atacama Desert also has the most lunar-like landscape on Earth and is frequently used by the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to test its Mars rover vehicles.

The entire race is held at least 1.6 kilometers / 1 mile above sea level and covers the distance required to make a horizontal crossing of the country of Chile (250 kilometers /150 miles).

The approximate distances of each stage are detailed below.  There are checkpoints approximately every 10 kilometers / 6 miles along the course where volunteers and a medical doctor are stationed to give you water and support.  Each checkpoint also has a tent providing shade.

The race  will no doubt prove to be a very difficult challenge both physically & mentally for all of us. To support us on our crazy quest we are asking you for a financial donation to RMHC Latvia.

It takes hundreds of thousands of Euros to run RMHC Latvia each year, and we hope to raise 20,000 by way of our participation in the Atacama Crossing 2011.

There are certain things in life that we tend to take for granted and convenient health care being close to if not at the top of the list.

Growing up we were fortunate enough to have relatively quick access to basic health care, including optometry, allergy care,  speech therapy, and general healthcare. This convenience is not afforded to many families living outside of Riga and although health care is provided throughout Latvia, it is often very difficult if not impossible for families living rurally to see a doctor quickly enough or without experiencing a significant level of financial hardship on the family.

The RMHC has been 5 years in the making and with much effort & patience this project came to fruition in the fall of 2010.

With the RMHC Caremobile, Latvian children in rural areas have better access to  healthcare specialists - free of charge - than ever before. The Caremobile's partnership with the Children's Hospital ensures that the quality care of a team of experts is available for trips throughout Latvia. The Caremobile runs on volunteer support and financial donations, and is reaching hundreds of children every month.
